Applications
1. Sensor Signal Conditioning
This is its most common use. It amplifies weak signals from various sensors to a level that can be read by a microcontroller's ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter).
Examples: Amplifying signals from thermocouples, pressure sensors, load cells, photodiodes, and temperature sensors (like NTC thermistors).
2. Active Filters and Impedance Buffers
It can be used to build active filters (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass) to remove unwanted noise. Its high input impedance also makes it ideal as a voltage follower buffer to isolate circuit stages.
Examples: Audio pre-amplification, power supply noise filtering, signal buffering.
3. Voltage Comparators
While not ultra-fast, it works well as a comparator for slow-changing signals to detect if a voltage exceeds a set threshold.
Examples: Over-voltage/under-voltage protection circuits, battery level detection, window comparators.
4. DC and Low-Frequency Amplifiers
It is a standard choice for amplifying DC or very low-frequency AC signals.
Examples: Instrumentation amplifiers, analog computing circuits (adders, integrators), and transducer amplifiers.
5. Power Management Systems
Its comparator functionality is useful for basic power monitoring and control.
Examples: Voltage monitoring, current sensing amplifiers (with a shunt resistor).
In summary, the LM258DR is ideal for cost-sensitive designs operating on a single power supply (e.g., 5V, 12V, 24V systems) that process DC or low-frequency signals. It is a workhorse for general-purpose amplification, filtering, and signal conditioning tasks where ultra-high precision or speed is not required.
Description
The LM258 consists of two independent high gain operational amplifiers. It can work with a single power supply or with a dual power supply, and the current consumption of the power supply has nothing to do with the power supply voltage. Applications include variable frequency amplifiers, DC gain sections and all conventional op amp circuits.
Available in DIP8 or SOP8 packages.
